What are AI glasses? How they work, types and uses.

Smart glasses have gone from niche product to everyday device — but ‘AI glasses’ doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone. This overview explains what’s behind the term, how the technology works and which types exist.

AI glasses — also called AI eyewear or AI smart glasses — are glasses that make artificial intelligence available right on your head: for navigation, translation, notes or a voice assistant, without reaching for your smartphone.

Unlike the classic industrial data glasses, today’s AI glasses are designed for everyday life: light, unobtrusive and wearable all day. Depending on the model, information reaches you via a display in your field of view, via audio, or via both.

In short: AI glasses = glasses + sensors + a link to artificial intelligence.

They deliver context-aware information (e.g. directions, translation) — quietly, hands-free and at the right moment.

Not every pair of AI glasses has a camera: display glasses such as the Even G2 deliberately leave it out.

How do AI glasses work?

Technically, a pair of smart glasses combines several components, all of which need to be as light and energy-efficient as possible:

  • Display (optional): A small display — often a so-called waveguide with micro-projection — reflects text and symbols into your field of view. On the Even G2 this display is monochrome, razor-sharp and visible only to the person wearing them.
  • Sound: Small speakers on the temple, or bone conduction, play back audio without blocking your ears.
  • Microphones: They pick up voice commands and enable translation as well as live transcription.
  • Sensors: Motion and orientation sensors detect gestures or head movements; some systems use a ring such as the Even R1 for discreet control.
  • AI & connectivity: The actual ‘intelligence’ usually runs on the paired smartphone or in the cloud. The glasses are the discreet input and output; the phone provides the processing power and internet.

The interplay is what decides everyday usability: weight, battery life, display brightness and how natural the controls feel matter more than the sheer number of features.

The three types of smart glasses

Anyone searching for ‘smart glasses’ or ‘AI glasses’ comes across three very different categories. Knowing them saves expensive mistakes:

1. Display and AI glasses

These glasses show you information in your field of view — navigation, translation, messages, teleprompter — and rely on an AI assistant. They have no camera and look like ordinary glasses. Example: the Even G2. Strength: discretion, privacy, everyday usability.

2. Camera and audio glasses

They record video and take photos from a first-person perspective and often offer a voice assistant through speakers — but usually no display. Strength: social media and point-of-view footage. Downside: in meetings, on the train or in conversation, the person opposite never knows whether they’re being recorded.

3. AR and media glasses

AR glasses overlay larger, sometimes colour image areas onto your surroundings — intended for watching films, for virtual monitors or gaming. They are usually bigger, heavier and designed for longer, seated use, less for a full day out and about.

AI glasses, smart glasses, AR glasses — what’s what?

The terms overlap but mean different things. Smart glasses is the umbrella term for any connected glasses. AI glasses emphasises the AI assistant and context-aware help. AR glasses (augmented reality) means overlaying graphical content onto the real world. A pair of glasses can fall into several categories — what matters is what they do for you, not the label.

What do you use AI glasses for day to day?

  • Navigation: Turn-by-turn prompts in your field of view, hands free, eyes on the road instead of on your phone.
  • Translation: Conversations subtitled in real time — handy when travelling, in international meetings and when learning a language.
  • Accessibility: Live transcription makes speech readable — valuable if you have a hearing impairment.
  • Productivity: A teleprompter for talks, notes and reminders, notifications on your own terms.
  • Health: Combined with a ring such as the Even R1, activity and sleep data can be shown discreetly.
