AI glasses or translation earbuds: what actually works better in conversation?

Glasses show the translation as text you read on the lens, earbuds speak it into your ear. Both come with a cost — here it is, situation by situation.

Two colleagues sat at the same table during a supplier negotiation in Basel last week — one with translation earbuds in, the other wearing our Even G2. After the meeting, both had a clear opinion on what had worked better. It just wasn't the same opinion — and both were right, for their own situation.

Short answer: there's no single winner, because the two approaches solve different problems. Glasses show the translated text on the lens — you read it at your own pace while the other person keeps talking, and nobody in the room sees a device in your ear. Earbuds speak the translation directly into your ear — that feels more natural if you'd rather listen than read, but it carries a real risk: when the earbud voice and the live speaker overlap ("talk-over"), you can end up following neither cleanly. For fast exchanges with a lot of back-and-forth, the glasses usually come out ahead; for long, calm explanations, the earbud often does.

How the two approaches actually work

The Even G2 is camera-free display glasses that pair to your phone over Bluetooth, with no SIM or eSIM of its own. Live translation is described by Even Realities as cloud-based: your phone sends the spoken audio to a translation service, and the result appears as text on the small monochrome display in front of your eye. Even Support lists 33 supported languages — three of them, Arabic, Bengali and Hindi, are shown only in the phone app according to the manufacturer, not on the lenses themselves. Translation earbuds work on a similar core: a companion phone app, a cloud connection for speech recognition and translation — except the result isn't shown as text, it's spoken back through the earbud speaker as a synthetic voice. So the machinery behind the scenes (phone, app, internet) is fairly similar; the difference you actually feel sits only in the last step: reading or listening.

We haven't run a controlled measurement of both approaches — the table below follows from showroom experience and from what each method's mechanics logically imply.

The earbuds' weak spot: taking one out

Something comparisons rarely mention: when you want to reply yourself without the translated voice talking over you, or you want to hear the room unfiltered for a moment, many people pull an earbud out. That's a visible, slightly fumbling gesture — it signals "there's a translation device involved" to an observant counterpart more clearly than the glasses ever do. Putting it back in and re-syncing costs a beat of attention, right as the conversation keeps moving. The glasses need no such removal: your eyes flick to the lens and back, a much smaller and less conspicuous motion.

The glasses' weak spot: you have to read

Fair to our own side: reading takes a share of your visual attention that would otherwise be on the other person's face. If you personally don't read quickly or comfortably — say, in a third language that's neither yours nor theirs — spoken translation often gets you to understanding faster. There's also a hard limit: the small monochrome display only fits so much text at once, so very long sentences get read in chunks rather than taken in at a glance.

What stays equally uncertain on both sides

Both approaches hang on the same chain: phone, internet connection, cloud translation service. Without a connection — a tunnel, a basement, airplane mode — live translation stops working on either approach; on the glasses, only whatever was downloaded beforehand, such as a teleprompter script, keeps working. Both also depend on your phone's microphone picking up clean speech — background noise degrades the input for both about equally, and that's a microphone problem, not a display problem. And for Swiss German, the same caveat applies to both: speech engines generally target Standard German, dialect is noticeably harder to recognise, and reliable support isn't guaranteed on either path.

On raw speed: neither Even Realities nor the translation-earbud makers we're aware of publish solid latency figures, and we haven't run our own controlled test. Anyone reading "faster" in a sales brochure is reading a claim, not a verified measurement — ours included.

So: buy which, skip which, test first?

Go for the glasses with confidence if you already want AI glasses for notifications, teleprompter, notes or navigation, and translation is a welcome bonus — for short, back-and-forth conversations, negotiations, and situations where discretion matters, the on-lens format is a genuine advantage.

Think twice if translation is your only reason to buy and your real conversations tend to be long, one-directional explanations you'd rather listen to than read — or if your target language is Arabic, Bengali or Hindi, which don't appear on the lenses themselves. For that, a dedicated translation earbud may be the better fit; we don't sell any, so we can't recommend a specific brand, only the category.
