A demo visitor from the Emmental sat down at our showroom table, greeted us in broad Bärndütsch, then asked Live Translate — in the same dialect — to turn a full sentence into English. What appeared on the lenses was closer to a guess than a translation. That's not a fluke a firmware update fixes; it's a genuinely hard problem, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing shrug.
Short answer: don't count on it. The Even G2's Live Translate, like almost every commercial speech engine, is built around Standard German (Hochdeutsch) audio and text. Swiss German isn't one dialect with a standard spelling — it's a family of regional dialects (Züritüütsch, Bärndütsch, Baseldytsch, Wallisertiitsch and more) that people speak constantly but rarely write the way they say it. How well a speech engine copes with broad dialect varies by speaker, by canton, and by how close the pronunciation drifts toward Hochdeutsch — and we have no accuracy figures to give you, because nobody selling this technology honestly has a clean number either. The only real answer is to test your own dialect, and the dialects of the people you'll actually talk to, before you rely on it for anything that matters.
Why Swiss German is a genuinely different problem
Modern speech recognition and translation systems learn from enormous amounts of paired audio and text — millions of hours of speech matched to a transcript. Standard German has that scale of training data: news broadcasts, audiobooks, subtitled video, web text, all written in a shared, standardised spelling. Swiss German mostly doesn't. It's an everyday spoken language without an official written standard — two people from the same canton might spell the same word three different ways if you ask them to write it down, and someone from Zürich and someone from Wallis can sound close to mutually unintelligible to each other on top of that. That's not a criticism of the dialects; it's simply a much smaller, much messier training problem than Hochdeutsch, and speech engines built for the mainstream market are trained on the mainstream language.
What that means for the G2's translation feature
Even's own documentation for Live Translate — which we've covered in more depth in our translation glasses overview — lists the target languages the feature supports; it does not list Swiss German dialect as a recognised source variant, and we haven't found any claim from Even that it is. That's an editorial reading on our part, not something Even states outright, but it lines up with how speech engines are built across the industry: normalise to the national standard language, not the regional spoken one. Translate is also a cloud feature, so whatever the recognition model is doing happens on a server, not on the glasses — there's no local "Swiss German mode" hiding in the firmware to switch on.
What you'll probably actually experience
In our showroom, results land all over the map, and that's the honest pattern to expect rather than a bug to report. Someone who leans toward a more standard-sounding pronunciation — the kind of German many Swiss speakers can shift into for a stranger or a formal setting — tends to get results closer to what they'd get speaking Hochdeutsch outright. Someone speaking broad, fast, idiom-heavy dialect, full of words that don't exist in Hochdeutsch at all, is more likely to get a translation that's partially right, partially garbled, or occasionally just wrong. Mixing dialect words into an otherwise standard sentence — completely normal in everyday Swiss speech — adds another layer of unpredictability. None of this is unique to Even; it's the same challenge every voice assistant and translation app built for the German-speaking market runs into.
What to actually test before you decide
- Bring the sentences you'd actually use it for — a work phrase, a travel question, a family greeting — not a neutral test sentence written for an app store screenshot.
- Test with your own natural speaking pace and volume, not a slowed-down "talking to a computer" voice.
- If you'll mainly use it with family or colleagues who have a different dialect than you, bring them along or bring a recording, since accuracy varies by speaker.
- Compare a Hochdeutsch-leaning sentence against a strongly dialectal one, side by side, so you can see the actual gap rather than assume one.
- Check both directions if relevant: how well your dialect is understood, and how clear the translated text is once it lands on the lenses.
All of this takes a few minutes at our Zürich showroom, with your own phone and your own voice — the only honest test, because a demo video with someone else's voice tells you nothing about yours.
So: buy, skip, or test first?
Buy with reasonable confidence if you mainly need Live Translate for foreign-language conversations — the dialect question barely applies there, since you're the one speaking a language you already know isn't Swiss German.
Think twice if the whole point of your purchase is having strong Swiss German dialect reliably turned into another language for you, with no tolerance for occasional misfires. That's the scenario where today's technology, not just this device, is weakest.
Test first, always, if dialect handling is anywhere near your deciding factor.
