How readable is the AI glasses display in sun, snow and backlight?

A projected display lays light over the world rather than replacing it. In room light that is clear and calm; on a March snowfield it is competing with one of the brightest surfaces nature offers. The honest question is not "does it work" but "at what brightness does it get hard".

The test that tells us the most does not happen in the showroom but on the car park outside it: glasses on, out into the midday sun, then read a notification while your gaze drifts across a bright white wall. That spot — not the softened light of a shop — is where a projected display either carries you through the day or does not. The short, unexcited truth first.

Short answer: Indoors, in shade and on normal overcast days, the Even G2's monochrome display is comfortably readable. In very bright light — direct sun in your view, a white wall, and above all snow glare — a projected display can lose contrast, because it adds light on top of an already very bright background rather than covering it. That is a basic property of see-through displays, not a fault unique to this model. We deliberately give no nit or brightness figure — Even publishes none we could responsibly cite, and an estimate would be guessing. The only reliable test is the one outdoors, with your own eyes.

Why bright light is the stress test

The Even G2 does not replace your field of view with a screen. It casts a small, camera-free monochrome display over whatever you are already looking at — text and symbols float half-transparent in front of the real world. That is the strength of the idea: the glasses stay glasses, not a dark box over your eyes. It is also exactly why brightness matters. A see-through display adds light; it cannot darken the background. When that background is brighter than the display, contrast drops and thin characters go paler. This is pure optics and applies to every projected head-up display, from a fighter jet to smart glasses — it is our framing, not a manufacturer measurement.

In practice, then, "the sun" is not the problem; a very bright background behind the overlaid text is. The same display that looks razor-sharp against a dark tree can wash out against a white sky — even though nothing changed on the glasses, only what you are looking at.

Condition by condition, honestly framed

Here is how readability behaves, in our assessment, across the typical situations. "Background" means what lies through the lens behind the display — that is what decides it, not the time on the clock.

The Swiss stress test: snow

Snow glare is not a fringe case when you live here. A sunny winter day on the piste, a walk across a snow-covered field in the Engadine, even the reflection off fresh snow on the pavement in the morning — those are the brightest surfaces your eyes meet regularly. Skiers reach for tinted or mirrored lenses for good reason. For a see-through display, that environment is the hardest case of all: the background is close to maximally bright, and the overlaid navigation cue or notification has to hold its own against it. Expect the display to look markedly paler here than in a café — and if you are buying with winter sport in mind, check before you pay whether it stays usable for you.

What helps in practice

A few things move the limit noticeably, without us promising anything we cannot back up:

  • Change your angle. Text against a darker background — a row of buildings, trees, the ground instead of the sky — reads with more contrast at once. Often a slight lowering of the head is enough.
  • Find shade. Under an awning or a tree canopy the contrast returns, because the background gets darker.
  • Try the sun clip. Even offers a sun clip accessory that dims the incoming ambient light. Whether, and how much, that improves the display's readability depends on the case — it is a point best tried yourself rather than taken on a promise.

What we will not do is name a magic brightness level that solves everything. If there is a setting that helps for you, you will find it fastest in a direct comparison outdoors, not in a table.

So: buy, skip, or test first?

Buy with confidence if your day is mostly indoors, in the city and in normal daylight — office, meetings, travel, translation at a table. That is the environment where a see-through display plays to its strengths.

Think twice if your main reason to buy is reading navigation or notes in the middle of glaring surroundings — on the ski slope, on open water, on a snow-covered hike. There an additive display is working against physics, and no firmware update we could promise changes that fundamentally.

Test before you pay is the single most important line in this whole piece. Take the glasses at the Zürich showroom out of the door and read a real notification against the brightest sky the day offers. Can you read the Even G2 display in the sun?

In most everyday situations, yes. Indoors, in shade and on overcast days the monochrome display is comfortably readable. In very bright light — direct sun in your view, or a white surface directly behind the display — contrast can drop, because a see-through display adds light and cannot darken the bright background. How well it holds up for you is best checked outdoors.

How bright is the display in nits?

Even publishes no official display brightness in nits that we could responsibly cite, and we do not invent a figure. Is snow glare a problem for the AI glasses?

Snow is the honest stress test. A snow-covered field or a sunny piste are among the brightest surfaces there are, and a see-through display has to compete with them. Expect the display to look markedly paler there than indoors. Anyone buying mainly for winter sport should absolutely test the glasses first in exactly that environment.
