A service technician from Aargau stood in our showroom with leather gloves and a hard hat tucked under one arm, and he wanted exactly one thing settled: would this survive his working day? Not whether the translation feature was impressive, but whether he could operate it with gloves on, wear it under his helmet, and put it on over his safety goggles. Three quite different questions, and none of them has a blanket "yes".
Short answer: gloves work partially — the temple touch sensor responds reliably to bare skin and thin, conductive gloves, but gets unreliable to unusable with thick leather or winter gloves. Under a standard hard hat, the Even G2 sits much like ordinary glasses, provided the temple arms are slim enough for your specific helmet — that's something you need to test with your own gear. Over or under a sealed, close-fitting pair of safety goggles, it doesn't work: both devices want the same real estate on your nose and temples, and the safety goggles win that contest every time. Most important: the Even G2 is a consumer device for office and everyday use, not certified personal protective equipment under EN 166 or an equivalent standard.
Gloves: fine bare-handed, tight with thick gloves
The Even G2's main control is a capacitive touch sensor on the temple arm — tap and swipe, similar to a smartphone screen. Capacitive sensors detect the skin's electrical conductivity. A bare fingertip works reliably, and so do many thin disposable nitrile or latex gloves, the kind common in lab work, medical settings or food handling. Once gloves get thicker — leather work gloves, insulated winter gloves, reinforced-fingertip trade gloves — detection becomes unreliable or stops working altogether, because the material blocks the capacitive signal. This isn't a quirk of the G2; it's a physical limit of every capacitive touch surface, from phones to job-site tablets.
In practice, that means anyone who regularly works in thick gloves shouldn't count on tapping the temple mid-task. A more realistic workflow is to set things up before gloving up — start a teleprompter script or turn on notifications — and then use the device passively for a stretch: reading what appears on the display rather than actively steering it. For short glove-off moments, a bare fingertip tap still works fine.
Under a hard hat: mostly yes, but test your specific model
The Even G2's temple arms are slim and sit flat against the head, similar to ordinary prescription glasses. Most construction and industrial hard hats are built with exactly this situation in mind — there's internal clearance for normal eyewear. In practice, the G2 sits about as unobtrusively as regular glasses under most helmet types. The honest caveat: helmets vary a lot in headband design, padding, and how tightly the internal harness sits, and some models with an integrated headlamp mount or hearing-protection clips eat into the temple clearance further. We don't have a list of "compatible helmets" to hand you, and we're not going to invent one — the only reliable test is wearing your own glasses with your own helmet for a while, ideally in the showroom or on your actual job site.
The hard limit: sealed, close-fitting safety goggles
Here the answer is unambiguous, and we're not going to soften it. Safety goggles designed to seal against splashes, dust or debris — full-vision goggles with a rubber gasket, chemical-splash goggles, many welding goggles — are built to enclose the eye area completely against the face. That's precisely the same real estate the Even G2 needs: the bridge of the nose and over the ears. Two frames cannot both occupy that space at once. Some safety goggles are marketed as "over-the-glasses" (OTG) and rated for wear over ordinary prescription eyewear — but that's a claim made by the goggle manufacturer about their own product, not a guarantee from Even Realities, and we have no basis to confirm it holds for the G2's specific shape across every OTG goggle on the market. Wherever a standard requires a sealed safety goggle — chemical splash, grinding work — that standard takes priority. The AI glasses stay in your pocket for that task.
Why we don't sell this as PPE
It matters to us not to overstate this: the Even G2 is a consumer electronics product for office, travel and everyday use — notes, translation, teleprompter, notifications. It is not tested or certified as personal protective equipment, not to EN 166 (eye protection), not as head protection, and not as hearing protection. For tasks that require certified safety goggles, a rated helmet or hearing protection, that equipment remains the baseline; the AI glasses can, at most, add value in moments where a sealed safety goggle isn't required — a walk-through inspection, a handover with an international colleague, or dictating a note between jobs.
So: buy, skip, or test first?
Worth it if your working day includes stretches without sealed safety goggles — inspection rounds, handovers, office moments between site visits, or situations with international colleagues where translation or notes genuinely help. Even with a hard hat, that's a realistic use case for most people.
Probably skip if most of your day is spent under sealed safety goggles or in thick gloves throughout — the glasses will spend most of that time in your pocket, and the benefit shrinks accordingly.
Test first with your own helmet, your own work gloves and, if relevant, your own safety goggles at the Zürich showroom.
